With Citizens Bank’s Senior Vice President and Chief Experience Officer, Mark Lemieux

Throughout the course of my career, the one thing I have learned when it comes to banking (and life in general) is that it’s all about reaching your goals. Here are three life lessons I’d like to share that will help you tackle any goal, financial or otherwise.

Take the first step

I love to do marathons – whether it’s a half-marathon or the full 26.2 miles. The point is not to win, it’s to finish, which would not be possible without taking the first step and starting the race. The trick is not to think about the end. Just think about taking the first step, then the next, and the next. Even if you start slow, you’ll find your pace and each step gets easier.

From a banking perspective, your financial life is just like a marathon. Rather than worrying about how you’re going to save $10,000, just start by saving $10. Instead of being overwhelmed by achieving a big savings goal, just take that first step and remember that each step gets easier.

Overcome the fear

If you’re in a bad situation—whether it’s a 400 credit score or a bankruptcy—there is often a giant fear factor involved. I had that experience just out of college; I had let some financial things go and I was too scared to check the mail because I was afraid to get the next bill. I overcame the fear by just facing it little by little. First, it was checking the mail. Then writing a check. The more action I took, the less the fear was in control. Instead of spinning into hopelessness, you realize that action adds up, and you’ll be so much better off a year from now.

Know you are not alone

When you walk into one of our offices, you’ll find a caring team ready to help. The bankers across from you didn’t always have amazing credit scores. They’ve had to fight just like you do. They’ve been there, and they know the way out. So if you need help financially, take the first step and come talk to us. Whether you stop by our main office here in Mooresville, Indiana, or any of our branches, we’re here to talk you through whatever situation you may be facing. You don’t have to bear that burden alone.

If you are ready to take that first step, feel free to email me at mlemieux@citizens-banking.com or give me a call at 317-831-9621. Either way, we will do this together. Citizens has your back!
